Orthodontic treatment is the method of straightening or moving teeth to improve the appearance of the teeth and how they work and also to improve the function of a patient's teeth and bite.
Orthodontic treatment may consist of:
Removable appliances and/or retainers
Full or partial braces, including "Invisible" braces
Extractions of primary teeth
Headgear
Orthodontic treatments are often performed on children but adults can also benefit from the many available treatments for straightening and moving teeth. Children should be screened (assessed) starting at age 7 as early intervention is usually most beneficial.
Preventive Orthodontics
Preventive orthodontic treatment includes the control of cavities and decay to prevent tooth loss. It also includes the use of space maintainers to prevent drifting of permanent teeth as well as early detection of any abnormalities.
Interceptive Orthodontics
Interceptive orthodontics means to correct problems are they develop rather than correcting them after they develop. Samples of interceptive orthodontics include the extraction of primary or permanent teeth to eliminate overcrowding or removing primary teeth that may cause misalignment.
Corrective Orthodontics
Corrective orthodontics is the use of appliances, retainers and braces to correct problems in a patient's bite or teeth. Corrective orthodontics restores teeth back to their full function.
