What is Oral Surgery
Oral surgery encompasses any procedure that cuts into or removes hard/soft tissue from the mouth. This procedure includes removing teeth, bone grafting, facial reconstruction, gum surgery, and dental implants. It also involves removing diseased tissue from the mouth, correcting jaw issues, and repairing a cleft lip or palate.
Individuals may need oral surgery for reasons ranging from facial trauma to tooth extractions to correcting cleft lip, palate, or unequal jaw growth. Depending on the complexity, the timeline for surgery can be as quick as 10–20 minutes or a few hours.
Proper preparation is essential to a successful outcome.
Oral Surgery Treatments & Services
Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) focuses on surgical treatments involving the jaw, mouth, neck, and face. Oral surgeons receive extensive training beyond dental school to perform various surgical procedures.
Here are the essential aspects and treatments comprising oral surgery:
Tooth Extractions & Wisdom Teeth Removal
While saving a natural tooth is preferable, sometimes it becomes impossible. Dentists conduct simple or complex tooth extractions, including those from impacted wisdom teeth. Teeth severely damaged from decay, gum disease or injury may need extraction for your overall oral health.
Bone Grafts, Socket Preservations
Bone grafts involve the dentist strengthening the jaw bone to support dental implants. Sinus lifts are bone grafting in which the dentist adds bone material to the upper back jaw, increasing the bone amount in the sinus area for dental implants.
Dental Implant Placement
Dental implants involve titanium posts inserted into the jawbone to replace missing teeth and attach dental implants. These screws function like the root of your tooth. Additionally, they perform bone grafting to augment bone volume into the jaw for a successful implant placement.
After they add the titanium post, the dentist does a tooth replacement, such as a bridge or crown, which operates and looks like a natural tooth.
Oral Pathologies
Several signs of disease are detectable on the cheeks, lips, gum tissue and palate. Oral surgeons treat and diagnose facial and oral pathologies, including tumours, cysts, and infections surrounding the oral cavity and its structures.
At Bristol Dental Clinic, we can diagnose issues, but we are not oral pathologists.
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders
TMJ consists of a family of issues related to the complex jaw joint. If you experience pain or a clicking sound, the issue is easily diagnosed and treated. Symptoms occur when the chewing muscles and jaw joints do not work properly. Some types of issues can cause serious conditions. Therefore, early treatment and detection are essential.
Surgical procedures to reduce pain and improve a patient’s jaw functioning may be necessary in severe cases of TMJ disorder when the patient is not responding to conservative treatment.
Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery
Oral surgeons perform cheek and chin enhancements, surgery to correct congenital deformities, and reconstructive surgery after trauma.
Sedation
Dentists administer sedation and anesthesia to provide patients with comfort and safety while they undergo surgical treatment. Depending on the procedure’s complexity and the patient’s needs, options can range from local anesthesia and conscious sedation to general anesthesia.
Oral surgery is essential in treating disorders and conditions affecting the jaws, mouth, and facial structure. Clients may receive a referral from their general dentist or other healthcare provider for specialized care requiring surgical intervention. Before receiving any surgical treatment, clients should discuss treatment options, risks, and recovery expectations with the oral surgeon.
Bristol Dental Clinic only offers mild sedation with nitrous oxide.
Why Wisdom Teeth Extractions Are Done
Wisdom teeth extractions are often necessary when these teeth cause problems or X-rays indicate potential future issues. One common reason for extraction is the damage that extra molars can cause to surrounding teeth, leading to crowding, mouth pain, and bite problems.
As we age, these complications can worsen, making early extraction advisable. Additionally, cysts may form around new teeth, which, if left untreated, can hollow out the jaw and damage nerves, complicating removal. Wisdom teeth can also cause sinus pain, pressure, and congestion, and their surrounding tissue may become inflamed, making it difficult to clean and leading to gum disease.
This inflammation can cause the gums to recede and create pockets where bacteria grow, increasing the risk of cavities. Impacted wisdom teeth can push other teeth out of alignment, interfering with dental work such as braces or crowns. They can also cause infections, bone loss, and tissue damage.
Aftercare Instructions for Extractions and Oral Surgery
After a dental extraction, clients should follow these instructions for a better outcome:
- Bite on gauze for 30 minutes.
- Keep your fingers/tongue away from the surgical area.
- Use an ice pack or ice bag on the surgical area of your face for two hours after surgery. Then, apply ice for 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off.
- Avoid rinsing your mouth for 24 hours.
- Consume plenty of cold beverages for four to six hours, and avoid using a straw. Do not drink carbonated water (pop). Your diet should consist of warm/lukewarm soft foods that are easily chewable and swallowed (avoid nuts, rice, popcorn, etc).
- After 24 hours, patients can rinse their mouths with warm salt water and continue for a few days.
- To alleviate mild discomfort, take Tylenol or ibuprofen every four hours. If you are in severe pain, take prescription medicine as prescribed.
- Expect some bleeding after surgery. Stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the area for 30–45 minutes. If it continues, use a moist gauze or a warm, moist teabag. Hold it firmly to the area for 30 minutes.
- Avoid smoking for a minimum of five days after surgery.
- Avoid frequent spitting. However, if you must spit, refrain from vigorous spitting.
- Some bleeding, pain, and swelling are expected to decrease gradually over the first two days.
- Decrease activity as much as possible for several hours.
- Refrain from unnecessary conversation for the first few hours, which hinders healing.
- Immediately after surgery, begin taking medication as prescribed by your doctor. It will minimize discomfort when the anesthesia wears off and you return to normal.

Oral surgery encompasses various procedures designed to save a natural tooth or for restorative procedures. However, when preserving the natural tooth is not possible, we can recommend procedures to restore your natural smile.
