Veneers

You receive veneers to match the colour of the rest of your teeth. However, veneers can become stained and it is difficult to lighten them up even with professional whitening products. Your best course of action is to take steps to prevent them from darkening and to see your dentist right away in the case of stains.

Stains at the Gum Line

Brown lines can occur on veneers just below where the gums meet the teeth. This is due to gums receding and exposing the tooth not covered by the veneer. Stains tend to be due to coffee, wine, and other dark foods and beverages.

To prevent this problem, brush your teeth correctly and receive regular cleanings. You should also have a pocket reading at every checkup — this will measure how much your gums are receding.

Darkened Veneers

Porcelain is resistant to stains. If a veneers start darkening, ask your dental hygienist to polish it at your teeth cleaning.

Damaged Teeth

If your tooth is damaged due to impact, the dentin in the middle of the tooth can lead to yellowing. This may show through the veneer. A professional whitening from your dentist involves applying whitening gel to the back of the tooth. This will lighten the colour reflecting through the veneer and make your whole tooth appear whiter.

Old Veneers

Veneers more than 20 years old may be made from a porous material other than porcelain, meaning they are more prone to staining. If an old veneer has become discoloured, your best option is to change to a new veneer.

Wrong Shade

It is essential to whiten all your teeth to the shade you want before your receive a veneer. Once you have a veneer, you will be unable to lighten your teeth further if they are to continue matching.
